Littleton, Colorado, is home to many sports teams. A few of these sports are football, baseball, soccer, and lacrosse. The local high school football team is the Littleton Lions, with their mascot being a lion named Niles. Throughout winter, multiple hockey games are played at the Avalanche Ice Coliseum, with men’s matches played on Wednesday night with an inter-league game on Thursday nights and Friday and Saturday night junior league games. In the summer, the Cherry Creek Lacrosse League teams play Littleton LacRosse. On the Fourth of July, the annual Littleton Rodeo takes place at the South Suburban Rodeo Arena, in which Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) events are held. As well as the Rodeo, Littleton’s biggest sports event is held at South Suburban Park called the “Littleton Baseball Tournament,” where Little League teams come from all over to compete.
Football Game
Littleton’s first organized football game was on November 11th, 1893, between East Denver High School and Barnum High School. The Lions opened their 2013 season playing against Lakewood High School with an away game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium. They opened their home schedule on September 5th against Grandview High School, winning 35-0. On October 3rd, the Lions played back-to-back home games for the first time this season against Bear Creek Pioneers and Overland Trailblazers, both of who were away games the week prior.
On October 24th, 2013, Littleton High School played against Heritage High School at South Suburban Park in Littleton in their homecoming game. The Lions would lose in a hard-fought game by only 3 points with a score of 14-17. At the end of October, Littleton ended its season away at Grandview’s Wildcat Stadium, where they won 38-0 against Denver South. They finished the season 6-3 overall and 6-2 within their conference.
Head coach Mike Siegert coached the football team, assisted by coaches John Forkeran, Jon Coffman, Jacob Clark, and Jeff Pomeroy, among others. Their next season will start on August 31st, 2014, when they face crosstown rival Grandview High School.
The Hockey
The Hockey Association was founded in 1992 as part of the Colorado Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA). In 1993, the association affiliated with the City of Littleton changed its name to the Littleton Hockey Association.
Littleton derived most of its ice rink facilities for skating and hockey from the financing by Cigna Insurance Company with money left over after construction on what would become the South Suburban Family Sports Center/Centennial Ice Arena. With skate clubs, various hockey leagues for all ages, figure skating groups, along with skating times available at both rinks, they played 24 regular-season games against five other teams within the WSHL. Within that first year, they finished third place in their division with a record of 20-6-2.
The Avalanche Ice Coliseum
