One of the greatest things about Denver is that the Rocky Mountains are so close. Though Denver may not be a mountain town itself, you can find beautiful mountains nearby, and the city has become a sanctuary for hikers, campers, and mountaineers alike.
Go Hiking or Drive Around the Park
At Rocky Mountain National Park, hiking is considered the main attraction. Hence, you need to be prepared with comfortable and sturdy boots or shoes to make the most of the famous trails, like Emerald Lake Trail and Bear Lake. If you want to experience the park from the safety and comfort of your vehicle, consider taking the longer and more exciting Old Fall River Road or the hour-long drive on Trail Ridge Road.
Stop at Beaver Meadows
Before doing anything and starting hiking or driving in the Rocky Mountain National Park, make sure to stop at Beaver Meadows first. Beaver Meadows is one of the visitor centers in the park where you can stock up on information and maps to help you while traveling. Here, you can obtain the park’s educational overview. According to the visitors, they have knowledgeable and very helpful rangers who can assist you in deciding which trails you should hike, based on your skill level and time. You can also buy equipment like cleats or walking sticks here.
Camping
The Rocky Mountain National Park has five popular campgrounds, one that can only accommodate tent campers and four others that are open to vehicle or tent camping (motorhomes, trailers, pickup campers, and tent trailers). During the busy fall months and busy summer, it’s highly recommended that you book reservations in advance. Moreover, visitors may camp in the spectacular wilderness of the park at night if they are up for an adventure. However, you need to get permits first before you can do so.
What to Eat?
You will not find any restaurants in the park. However, you can find a snack bar in the Cades Cove Campground Store that serves a few items for breakfast, such as fountain drinks, soft-serve ice cream, pizza, chili, soup, wraps, and sandwiches. Moreover, this store sells limited camping and grocery items. You can find vending machines as well at both riding stables and the Oconaluftee, Sugarlands, and Elkmont Campground visitor centers.
